John had already been releasing music independently, but it wasn’t gaining the level of traction it should have. The tracks were strong, but visibility was inconsistent and engagement around releases would spike briefly, then drop off. In a crowded pop space, that makes it difficult to build any real momentum.
There was also a clear step up to meet. AWAL had given John the opportunity to progress, which brought higher expectations around visibility, consistency, and audience growth. The focus shifted towards how each release was handled from start to finish, with content planned in advance rather than reacting after the fact, and more attention given to how the music was introduced. Part of that involved stepping back and reviewing what was already working, alongside how similar artists were approaching releases, so decisions weren’t being made in isolation.
A lot of the work sat around consistency. Social content needed to support the release properly, not sit alongside it, and messaging was tightened so everything felt more connected. There was also more structure in how activity was spaced out, so things didn’t just appear and disappear.
Alongside that, tracks were submitted across multiple playlist curations to improve reach on Spotify, helping extend the life of each release beyond the initial push rather than everything relying on a short window of attention. Over time, things started to build more steadily. Streams became more consistent, engagement held for longer around releases, and there was a clearer sense of identity across platforms.
That shift helped close the gap between independent output and what’s expected at label level, playing a part in moving things forward with AWAL without needing to rely on anything that felt forced or out of place.
"Since working with Josh, things have moved up a level. During my first release campaign, engagement improved and my Spotify curation became more efficient. His attention to detail and the way he approaches the work have made a real difference. I’m looking forward to building on that with future releases.”
